Details

The project aims to enhance the accessibility and educational value of @planksip's YouTube videos featuring Plato's dialogues. By adding precise timestamps aligned with Stephanus Numbers, learners will bridge the gap between audio-visual content and classical texts. The task involves listening to Benjamin Jowett’s translation of Plato's dialogues and meticulously cross-referencing with the Perseus digital edition to ensure accurate alignment. This project offers students an opportunity to apply their skills in classical studies, digital humanities, and media editing. The project is designed to be completed by a small team of learners within a single academic program, ensuring a focused and cohesive approach. The ultimate goal is to create a seamless learning experience for viewers, enhancing their understanding of Plato's works.

Deliverables

The primary deliverable is completing the following spreadsheet.

  1. Highlight the dialogue you want to work on by changing the background to light red and adding a note with your name. Notice how the Apology is light yellow and has the note "Completed." The dialogue picked should follow the same format, which will prevent students from duplicating work.
  2. Carefully listen to the dialogue from the planksip YouTube channel (link at the top of the column in row 1 while reading the dialogue in the Perseus library.
  3. Make sure you are following the same convention with 0:00 [stephanus#] that you see in the Apology (column B) and Gorgias (column H).
  4. Compare notes with other students or your supervisor to make sure you are doing it correctly.
  5. You will be judged by how many Stephanus numbers you add. Please make sure to complete one full dialogue before starting another one and remember to highlight the dialogue at the top of the column and add your name as a note to prevent duplicate work,
  6. You will need to be logged into the plato@planksip.org GSuite account in order for Gemini to record, transcribe, and make notes for you automatically. You will be required to turn this on while working on the project.

NOTE: Video of you interacting with the dialogue may be used for future training or marketing for our course called, Re-imagining Plato.

planksip.org is a place for Platonic scholarship and Socratic learning. This community of philosophers extends beyond the confines of a simple course with introductory concepts and familiar summaries of Plato that fall short of the Justice deserved for this intellectual giant.
