Does your organization have a cost accounting challenge you want to tackle? In this project, student-consultants working in teams will apply their knowledge of the concept and characteristics of cost with specific emphasis on decision-making situations that require working with accounting information toward the solution of an issue of your choice. They will explore the application of costs to process, job order and standard cost accounting systems. Concepts such as activity-based costing, just-in-time inventory systems and material requirements planning are also covered. The students will develop a written report and virtual presentation for your organization upon completion of the project.

Project Examples

Requirements

Beginning of September 2021, students in groups of 3-5 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.

Project activities might include but are not limited to:

  • Calculating various types of costs and understanding their behavior;
  • Performing cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis;
  • Examining the fundamentals of cost analysis for decision making;
  • Estimating costs;
  • Examining the fundamentals of product and service costing;
  • Examining the fundamentals of job costing;
  • Understanding the fundamentals of service department and joint cost allocation;
  • Planning and budgeting;
  • Performing variance analysis;
  • Using Microsoft Power BI [business intelligence] for data analysis and visualization purposes;
  • Discerning ethical dilemmas in cost accounting for decision making;
  • Completing a written group project and a virtual presentation advising your organization on how to solve a cost accounting issue.

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for a quick phone/virtual call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone/virtual calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.

Provide an opportunity for students to present their work and receive feedback. The presentation may be oral and/or written.
