project planning marketing strategy data analysis research strategic planningThis course specifically looks at the topics and practices necessary to lead, manage, and effectively administrate a modern police organization. Students are exposed to the myriad of tasks and responsibilities taken on by police managers and executives. The underlying message of the course is that to effectively lead and manage a modern police organization, a police executive needs four things:
- The skills to lead the organization towards desired goals;
- The ability to manage the performance of those within the organization;
- The ability to effectively build positive relationships with the community;
- The ability to use data to inform the decision-making process and messaging of organizational decisions.
Learners
Depending on the project that students will be working on, the final product could be in the form of a written report, oral presentation, or other work product conveying the information. The specific nature and style are largely dictated by partner preference and practicality,

Project Examples
Requirements
In the past students have done a number of projects in this class including, but not limited to:
- Developing and refining strategic plans
- Performing basic staffing studies
- Examination of basic budgetary allocations
- Developing community engagement plans
- Developing assessment center materials for promotional processes
- Disparity analyses (within and outside the organization)
- Developing media engagement strategies
- Developing data driven plans for the adoption of evidence-based policing practices
In addition to working with public safety agencies, we will also consider working with community groups, NGO's and businesses that would benefit from a collaboration of this kind. Given the course material, students need something from an administrative perspective, but this could be policy review, data analysis, or strategic planning or review for NGOs. For corporate partners willing to do work in these areas, we are willing to partner as well. The students' expertise will be more limited in this domain, but they (and I) are willing to learn and meet the challenge.
