Details

The student's goal on this project is to produce a literature review on trauma-informed pedagogy related to the topic of gender-based violence. The literature review will contribute to a broader project that is investigating how contemporary conversations about sexual violence post-#MeToo have seeped into classroom conversation at post-secondary institutions (both in courses that are directly on the topic on sexual violence and those that are not) and require educators to be able to navigate these conversations in trauma-informed ways. There is a gap in the literature pertaining to best practices for effectively engaging in challenging classroom dialogue about gender-based violence using a trauma-informed approach, and this project will contribute to theory and praxis related to addressing these challenges.

Deliverables

The student will complete a literature review (primarily within a North American context) and write a report synthesizing findings guided by the following questions:

  • What does the literature say about trauma-informed pedagogy? (e.g., trigger warnings, how to navigate conversation about sexual violence that may cause re-traumatization, and how to deal with incidents of harm that happen in the classroom).
  • How does the literature attend to intersectionality?
  • What are the gaps in the literature?
  • What kind of resources currently exist to aid post-secondary educators in navigating conversations about gender-based violence in trauma-informed ways in their classrooms?
  • What kinds of supports are in place for students and educators who face sexual harassment from students connected to classroom conversations on sexual violence?

The final report should summarize the articles that have been reviewed, and make connections between them to identify and explain themes.

Mentorship

I will provide initial direction and a background on the overarching study so that the student will be clear about what the objectives of the literature review are. I will be available to meet with the student should there be any challenges during the literature review or report writing stages. I will supervise the student by checking in with them about the progress of the work to make sure they feel the work is on track.
