This course is designed to provide the tools to think strategically about the role of supply management, to recognize the significance of the interactions between the function and the rest of the organization and to gain a ‘hands on’ awareness of real world supply management through USD’s Supply Management Clinic. Many students have used what they learned in this class immediately in their supply management position – and that is a large part of the purpose of this course.

Project Examples

1) Water Project – (Giving students access to drinking water).

Another student team conducted a project which led to the replacement of 5 gallon water bottles across campus. Water filtration systems were added for faculty and staff but water for students was not included in this project.

There are several water fountains but the water is not filtered. A student team is needed to conduct a survey of water fountains and identify what is needed to provide filtered drinking water to students. Do we need to retrofit existing fountains? Add bottle fill stations, Elkay units? What is the cost associated with this and how does this help to advance sustainability at USD?

2) Elevating Procurement at USD

Student team needed to help elevate procurement at USD. How do we market and sell the benefits procurement adds to the university? What is procurement? Why is it important? What are some of the key steps to change culture and mindset about the role procurement plays and the benefit we bring to the university?

3) Sustainable Purchasing

Student team needed for internal marketing of our Sustainable Purchasing Guidelines. How do we market this to our internal customers and help them understand the value of responsible purchasing?

4) Supplier Diversity

Student team needed for internal marketing of Supplier Diversity Program. Our program is tied to the university’s strategic goals, yet we struggle to meet our goals and still struggle to get end users to follow our procurement processes.

5) Category Management

Look at the various categories of goods and services the university purchases. Student team needed to help us determine the best strategy for category management at USD.
